چکیده

T HERHYTHMICACTIVITY of thestomach is associated with action potentials which are similar to those of other visceral muscles, including the heart (I). In the work reported here, these potentials were further analyzed by recording monophasic potentials and by leading off separately from longitudinal and circular muscles. Also the action of some drugs was investigated. The fact that monophasic potentials can be recorded is significant in itself, because it confirms the assumption that the smooth muscle of the stomach is a single muscular unit. Because several recent investigators have questioned the unitary character of visceral smooth muscles, some of the arguments for this assumption will be discussed.

The Action Potentials of the Stomach

The potential changes associated with the conduction of impulses in muscle and nerve can be interpreted only if they are led off from small regions of the tissue. This is accomplished most satisfactorily by recording monophasic potentials or by recording the potentials in the intact tissue with differential electrodes. In the study of the stomach only tJhe second of these methods is practical. ...

Propagation of Action Potentials and the Structure of the Nexus in Cardiac Muscle

The hypothesis that the nexus is a specialized structure allowing current flow between cell interiors is corroborated by concomitant structural changes of the nexus and changes of electrical coupling between cells due to soaking in solutions of abnormal tonicity. Fusiform frog atrial fibers are interconnected by nexuses. The nexuses, desmosomes, and regions of myofibrillar attachment of this mu...

A Note on the Monophasic Non-specific Salmonella Types.

The discovery of phase variation by Andrewes (1922) has had a profound effect on the differentiation of Salmonella types. This phenomenon and the demonstration of heat-stable and heatlabile receptors by Weil and Felix (1920) form the basis for the modern classification of the paratyphoid group. Through the work of a number of investigators it has gradually been accepted that the motile Salmonel...

Electrical Transmission at the Nexus between Smooth Muscle Cells

The hypothesis that nexuses between cells are responsible for the core conductor properties of tissues was tested using smooth muscle preparations from the taenia coli of guinea pigs. Action potentials recorded from small diameter preparations across a sucrose gap change from monophasic to diphasic when a shunt resistor is connected across the gap. This indicates that transmission between smoot...

Right ventricular monophasic action potentials in patients with long QT syndrome.

In 3 patients with the long QT syndrome, one caused by quinidine and 2 of congenital origin, right ventricular monophasic action potentials were excessively prolonged and of varying shapes in different recording sites. In addition, effective refractory periods of the ventricular muscle were abnormally long.
